Have stuff, need stuff

At wxyc, we have “mentors,” who help guide us on our journey from inexperienced eager DJ to aloof music elitist (just kidding).

Today I got a tour of the library from my “mentor,” a guy also named David. It’s not really a “tour,” since I’ve done four shows and know my way around the library, more of a “let’s walk around the library and I’ll show you awesome stuff.” And some awesome stuff was there to be found —

I also found some great stuff on my own — As in Leon Russel being backed by the old-school New Grass Revival line-up, with Cowan, pre-Fleck. It is GOOD.

Here’s what I’m searching for — JAZZGRASS. Something like David Grisman, but not Grisman. Some stuff I’ve found so far is Modern Mandolin Quartet (featuring Mike Marshall who always plays with Grisman, though this is really more classical than Jazz. Side note: Why is that when they play Bach it sounds so jazzy to me?). Who can help me find awesome jazzgrass/dawg/acousto-jazz. I know it must exist out there somewhere? And, to both broaden and narrow the request, I need to hear more jazz fiddle. Doesn’t really have to be bluegrassy, I guess, I just think the fiddle can be a jazz-monster and I haven’t really heard that much of it.

Although the station does not have the Raising Arizona soundtrack (despite having the Big Lebowski soundtrack), I finally found a version of Way Out There (which you’ll recognize as the Raising Arizona Theme with the yodeling and banjo-ing). This version, by Sons of the Pioneers, is not nearly as cool because it has um-pah guitar instead of the awesome banjo from the Carter Burwell (i.e. Raising Arizona) version. The yodeling is still awesome though, which leads to request number 2: Who can point me towards some really awesome yodeling? Not just those old Jimmie Rodgers tunes.

That’s all for now, soon-to-exist readers.

Remember to tune in Fridays from 3:00 am to 6:00 am on WXYC (http://wxyc.org/programming/listen/)

Hello world!

Why do they give you an automatic title? “Hello world”

I mean, I know I can change it but… it seems like an insult to our creativity. I guess after spending so much time and effort coming up with an awesome blog name, they think you could use a break. In that case, thanks to wordpress for being so considerate!

Anyway, I started this blog mainly because I recently got a DJ spot at WXYC, UNC’s student-radio station. (Also because my girlfriends looked like so much fun — mostlypolished.wordpress.com). I have discovered so much awesome music since then, I felt the world needed to know! I also started it looking for suggestions, because I know there is much more great music to be found.

Also, I’ve sort of always wanted to start a political blog, but I’m not sure if this is the right place for it. Not sure if my soon-to-exist loyal readership will find that polarizing or turn-offish. So maybe I’ll start another blog too. But for now, this is the one, so come back, and listen to me on WXYC Friday mornings, from 3 am to 6 am EST (http://wxyc.org/programming/listen/)
